Evora
Our stay in Evora was the only pre-planned part of our trip outside of Lisbon and Porto. The Pousada de Evora was by far the most expensive place we stayed, though not the best. Location, however, means a lot, and we were smack-dab in the middle of the perfect Alentejan town -- pretty, neat, friendly, and filled with things to see within easy walking distance. Evora introduced us to a style of architecture and town structure we were to see repeated throughout the Alentejo.
As for the town itself, Evora "rose to prominence under the Romans and flourished throughout the Middle Ages as a centre of learning and the arts." Evora, like the Convento do Cristo in Tomar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
